Probably from Proto-Balto-Slavic *mat(r)-, from Proto-Indo-European *moh₁-, *meh₁- (endeavour, will, temper), see also Latin mōs (will, humour, wont, inclination, mood), Russian смотреть (smotretʹ, to watch), Serbo-Croatian мо̀трити/mòtriti (to watch).[1]
