From Proto-Germanic *swartaz, whence also Old English sweart, Old High German swarz, Gothic 𐍃𐍅𐌰𐍂𐍄𐍃 (swarts). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *swordo- (“dirty, dark, black”).
