Etymology 1

Originally a noun of place meaning “place of riding”, from the verb رَكِبَ (rakiba, to ride), from the root ر ك ب (r-k-b). Cognate with Hebrew מֶרְכָּבָה (merkaḇa, chariot), Ge'ez መርከብ (märkäb), Classical Syriac ܡܰܪܟܰܒܬܳܐ.
