From Proto-West Germanic *garihtijan, equivalent to ġe- +‎ rihtan. Cognate with Old Saxon girihtian, Old Dutch girihten, Old High German girihten, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍂𐌰𐌹𐌷𐍄𐌾𐌰𐌽 (garaihtjan).
