English

Historical province of Tavastia, shown in green over the borders of current (2018) administrative regions of Finland.

Etymology

Borrowed from Medieval Latin Tavastia, from East Scandinavian Old Norse Tafæistaland (attested in 11th century runestone Gs 13 as ᛆ ᛏᛆᚠᛋᛏᛆᛚᚭᚿᛏᛁ, transliterated "a tafstalãnti", normalized "a Tafæistalandi" 'in Tavastia'), from Tafæistr (Tavast) + land, the former probably being derived from tafʀ (laggard) + Æistʀ (Estonian).

Proper noun

Tavastia

  1. A historical province of Sweden, now part of Finland.
