Ancient Greek

Etymology

Borrowed from a Prakrit [Term?] form like veruḷiya cognate with Pali veḷuriya, from Dravidian, probably named after Velur (modern day Belur) in southern India.

The variants βηρύλλιον (bērúllion) and βηρύλλιος (bērúllios) reflect the source veruḷiya more faithfully than βήρυλλος (bḗrullos).
