From Old Norse nœgja, gnœgja, from Proto-Germanic *ganōgijaną. Cognates include Icelandic nægja, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌽𐍉𐌷𐌾𐌰𐌽 (ganōhjan) and German genügen.
