Etymology
From Proto-Slavic *(j)elenь, Proto-Indo-European *h₁el-(h₁)en- (“red deer, elk”). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἑλλός (hellós, “deer-calf”), ἔλαφος (élaphos, “deer”), Lithuanian elnias, Old Armenian եղն (ełn).
