From Proto-Balto-Slavic *blaiskas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰloyǵskos, from *bʰleyǵ-. Formed as the o-grade of *bliziti (to approach, get closer) +‎ *-skъ.

A direct cognate is Latvian blaiskums, blaizgums (spot).
