Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic свѧтъ, from Proto-Slavic *svętъ, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwen- (“holy”), compare Serbo-Croatian svȇt. Influenced by the earlier form sânt (from Latin sānctus), which it largely replaced.
