Adjective

più

  1. more (used for comparisons)

Italian

Etymology

Inherited from Latin plūs, from Old Latin *plous, from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₁-, *pelh₁u- (many).

The initial autogemination, though lost in standard pronunciation, is still found in most varieties of regional Italian. The gemination is occurs predictably before the palatization of the original liquid -l-, compare doppio, orecchio, etc.
