Latvian

Etymology

Formed from the preposition par with transference of intonation and consequent vowel lengthening (par̄ > pār > pāːr). The semantic differentiation between par and pār is a relatively new phenomenon, even though it was apparently already complete in 17th- and 18th-century grammars.[1]

Pronunciation

Preposition

pāriet pār tiltuto go over, to cross the bridge

  2. (figuratively) over
valdīt pār kāduto have power over someone
