From Proto-Indo-Iranian *suH-karás (pig, boar), from Proto-Indo-European *suH- (pig, hog, swine).

Cognate with Ancient Greek ὗς (hûs, pig), Latin sūs (pig), Avestan 𐬵𐬏 (), Persian خوک (xuk), Old English swīn (whence English swine), English sow, Bulgarian свиня́ (svinjá).
