English

Etymology

From Portuguese [Term?] or Spanish pargo, from Latin phagrum, accusative of phager, from Ancient Greek φαγρος (phagros, sea bream).[1]

The similarity of porgy to paugie, especially in non-rhotic accents, may have reinforced both terms.

Noun

porgy (plural porgies)

  1. Any of several fish of the family Sparidae; the sea bream.
    1. In particular, the scup (paugie, Stenotomus chrysops).
