Etymology
Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Slavic *pěkrъ, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂ḱ- (“to fasten, place”) (cognate with Latin pulcher (“beautiful”);[1][2] compare also Old Church Slavonic пѣгъ (pěgŭ)). Or cognate with Old High German fēh, Ancient Greek ποικίλος (poikílos, “multicoloured”) from Proto-Indo-European *peyḱ-.[3]
