Etymology

ho- (space, area, things) + -di- (color) + -∅- (ni-modal 3rd person subject prefix) + -ł- (classifier)-yił (neuter imperfective stem of root -YÉÉL, “be dark”)

The initial y of the stem assimilates to h after the classifier -ł-.
