Navajo[edit]

Etymology[edit]

di- (color) + -Ø- (ni-modal 3rd person subject prefix) + -ł- (classifier)-yił (neuter imperfective stem of root -YÉÉL, “to be dark”).

Verb[edit]

diłhił

  1. he/she/it is dark, jet black
  2. it is blood red

Usage notes[edit]

This is a neuter verb. As such, it has only the imperfective stem.

Conjugation[edit]

Paradigm: Neuter imperfective (ni).

IMPERFECTIVE singular duoplural plural
1st person dinishhił diniilyił dadiniilyił
2nd person diníłhił dinołhił dadinołhił
3rd person diłhił dadiłhił
4th person jidiłhił dazhdiłhił

Note: Unlike other adjectives of color, diłhił takes a -ł- classifier and deletes ni- in the 3rd person, like other non-color di-adjectives do (see i.e. dijool).
