Etymology[edit]

First attested as ekthorp in 1215-1226. Potentially a compound of Middle Dutch eggh (corner, boundary) and dorp (farmstead, village, secondary settlement). The first element is unlikely to be a personal name or dialectal aagt (low-lying pasture). Compare Bregtdorp.
