Etymology[edit]

New Latin, from Ancient Greek ἄγκιστρον (ánkistron, fishhook) +‎ -odon (tooth). The usual transliteration of γ for g follows the pronunciation. This spelling distinguishes this genus from the genus Ankistrodon of archosaurs.
