[edit]New Latin, from Ancient Greek ἄγκιστρον (ánkistron, “fishhook”) + -odon (“tooth”). The usual transliteration of γ for g follows the pronunciation. This spelling distinguishes this genus from the genus Ankistrodon of archosaurs.
