  1. (historical) A medieval kingdom of the Alans (proto-Ossetians) in the Northern Caucasus, roughly in the location of the modern republics of Adygea, Chechnya, Ingushetia and North Ossetia-Alania in modern Russia, existing from the 9th to 13th centuries CE.
  2. (colloquial) North Ossetia-Alania: A republic and federal subject of Russia, located in the Northern Caucasus mountains.
