Spanish

Etymology

Borrowed from Catalan l'Alguer, of unclear origin. Usually thought to derive from Medieval Latin Aleguerium (literally stagnation of seaweed) or from alga (seaweed) + -er, but either way from Latin alga (seaweed), from Proto-Indo-European *alg-, *alǵ- (to be dirty, slimy).
