Etymology

Introduced as a genus name by Abraham Gagnebin in 1755, rarely circulating before as a transcription of the Arabic حَاج (ḥāj) or more specifically vulgar pronunciation of its singulative, with prepended article, الْحَاجَة (al-ḥāja), this plant name deriving from Aramaic חָגָּה /‎ ܚ̈ܵܓܸܐ (ḥāggā, Alhagi), from Akkadian 𒂊𒄖𒌋 (egu, apparently Alhagi).

Proper noun

Alhagi f

  1. A taxonomic genus within the family Fabaceae – camelthorns, manna trees.
