From Proto-Indo-European *sleyg-, *sleyǵ- (to glide, smooth, spread). Cognate with Old Irish sligim (to smear) and Proto-Slavic *slьzьkь (smooth, slime).

Particularly: “Is PIE *(s)ley- (to slip, slide, be slimy) the ancestor of *sleyg-? There's a strong phonetic and semantic similarity here, as well as with *sleydʰ- (to slip, be slick).”
