From Proto-Balto-Slavic *mer-, *mir-, from Proto-Indo-European *mer-. Cognate with Lithuanian mir̃ti (to die), Latvian mìrt (to die), Sanskrit म्रियते (mriyáte, to die), Latin morior (to die).
