This Appendix is intended to indicate what can be found at certain websites (or URLs) that contain taxonomic information. Sister projects are not included.

A

  • {{R:AlgaeBase}} - detailed, comprehensive coverage of all ranks of algae and all types of algae, whatever their highest level classification, including placement, name status, subordinate taxa.
  • {{R:AlgaeBasedesc}} - specific details, possibly useful in producing a definition.
  • {{R:AnimalBase}} - all (or at least most) names of zoological taxa established from 1757 until the early 1790s, the beginnings of modern taxonomy
  • {{R:APWeb}} (Angiosperm Phylogeny Group, Missouri Botanical Garden) - advanced, modern coverage of plant taxa (and clades) generally ranked above tribe.

B

C

  • {{R:COL}} - Bare list of taxa, hierarchically arranged

D

E

  • {{R:EOL}} - very uneven effort to collect taxonomic information from many sources on taxa of all kinds; useful for some new taxa; may continue to improve.

F

  • {{R:Fishbase}} - wonderfully detailed information on fish species and genera, including numerous vernacular names, sometimes in many languages
  • {{R:Fossilworks}} - a comprehensive source of information on fossils; valuable for information on extinct taxa; apparently students of extinct animals do not always find modern taxa compatible with their grouping of bones by morphology, so placement in taxonomic groups can use older taxon names.

G

  • {{R:GRIN}} and {{R:GRIN genus}} - Good information on plant taxa of economic importance or native to North America
  • {{R:Gymnosperms}} - Good information on conifers.

I

  • {{R:ICTV History}} - definitive source on taxonomy of viruses
  • {{R:Index Fungorum}} - comprehensive coverage of taxonomic names of fungi.
  • {{R:ION}} - includes names not found in indexes of other databases, including disused names
  • {{R:AnimalDiversityWeb}} - placement of many animals; good non-technical articles on some
  • {{R:AviBase}} - birds
  • {{R:Bryology}} - mosses and lichen
  • {{R:HOL}} - Hymenoptera
  • {{R:ITIS}} (Integrated Taxonomic Information System) - a good database covering all kingdoms, particularly for North America, including Mexico)
  • {{R:Ruggiero}} - a modern consensus high-level (orders and above) effort attempting to achieve some kind of standard organization of taxa (PDF available)

L

  • {{R:LPSN}} (List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature) - Archaea, Bacteria

M

  • {{R:Mammals}} - Definitive work on mammals
  • {{R:MycoBank}} - comprehensive database of fungi; good information on classification; very comprehensive list of names, many of which may be synonyms.

N

  • {{R:NCBI}} (National Center for Biological Information (US)) - a very useful database for adding links to other databases for most taxa.

P

  • {{R:TPL}} (The Plant List) - a comprehensive database of plant names, that classifies them by status (accepted, synonym, etc) and a level of confidence in the status
  • {{R:Plants and their Names}} - Etymological information

T

  • {{R:TOL}} (Tree of Life) - excellent, but very incomplete, coverage of higher level taxa in article form
  • {{R:Tropicos}} (Missouri Botanical Garden) - Excellent database of plants

U

  • {{R:USDA Plants}} (US Dept of Agriculture) - good information, including images and North America distribution maps, for plants of US and Canada and others of economic importance

W

  • {{R:Hydrozoa}} - jellies and polyps
  • {{R:WoRMS}} (World Register of Marine Species) - excellent database on taxonomy of all kinds of marine life and many from other environments.
