Etymology[edit]

Especially if this is to be compared to *awidją, it seems really obvious to me that the first part of the word is the stem of *kūz (cow)... —CodeCat 19:03, 12 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

I never actually put that in the etymology... I guess I just got lost. It's supposed to be. Kroonen also gives the verbal root the word for cow was derived from, as "to graze, pasture" also "to keep", he gives Ancient Greek βόσκω (bóskō, to feed, tend) as a further example of the root. But *gʷṓws comes from quite a different root, namely *gʷew-, which apparently had only this noun derived from it, no verbs. —CodeCat 22:29, 12 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Kroonen, de Vaan and Beekes all give a root *gʷeh₃-u. I think maybe *gʷṓws is the same thing, only without the laryngeal listed. Anglom (talk) 22:37, 12 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
That's not something I can verify. You should bring that up at the Etymology Scriptorium. —CodeCat 22:45, 12 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
