First attested as in resta in 1217. Named after a toponym derived from a compound of over (on the other side of) and the hydronym Reest.

Usage notes[edit]

Avereest refers solely to the municipality. It was named for a small traditional designator of a strip of land on the other side of the Reest river. Oud-Avereest refers to a specific hamlet located within the region.
