[edit]From Proto-West Germanic *Balþawini, equivalent to Old English bald (“brave”) + wine (“friend”). Cognate with English Baldwin, French Baudouin, and Dutch Boudewijn. Displaced by the Norman ancestor of modern English Baldwin in the late 11th century.
