Etymology

From medieval (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin Baphometh, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Occitan Bafometz. Probably ultimately a corruption of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Arabic مُحَمَّد (muḥammad, Muhammad) (compare Old Galician-Portuguese Mafomat), although other sources have been suggested.
