Etymology

[edit]

Compound of Bartel (a personal name) and sluis (lock, sluice). The hamlet is named after a sluice which created a good deal of unrest when it was built. The cornerstone of the sluice has a satirical poem carved into it. This turned the sluice into something of a tourist attraction, much to the joy of a local innkeeper, a certain Bartel.
