Etymology[edit]

First attested as bekenesse in 1363. Compound of an unclear first element and Middle Dutch nesse (headland, spit). The first element may be Beke (a personal name) or a hydronym derived from beke (brook, stream), which would be a rarity for the polders west of Utrecht.
