[edit]Attested as Bregantinos since the 9th century;[1] either from Latin Brigantīnōs (“people of Brigantium”),[2] from Proto-Celtic *Brigantī, or directly from Proto-Celtic *brigantīnos (“king”) (compare Old Welsh brennin, brennhin).[3]
