The emerging linguistic consensus is that Proto-Baltic did not exist as a distinct language from Proto-Balto-Slavic, as I showed on User talk:Word dewd544#Proto-Baltic. —CodeCat 17:24, 7 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

To put it another way: Proto-Slavic started out as just another Baltic language. One of the reasons this took so long to be accepted has to do with misuse of the competing ideas in various ways by Russian and Baltic nationalists to imply that Baltic or Slavic languages were inferior or superior to each other, or that either Baltic or Slavic was too important to not have its own branch of Indo-European. That is probably true, but the reconstructed PB forms did not take Slavic into account, and cannot a priori be taken to be the state-of-the-art reconstructions for PBS as well. This question is independent from the existence of PB as a non-paraphyletic clade. The point is methodological: one must reconsider the reconstructions with Slavic data also added to the pool before deciding that PBS = PB. It would be better to simply delete PB, if one thinks that Proto-Baltic-without-Slavic really didn't exist. --Pereru (talk) 01:53, 29 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Keep because there are non-empty subcategories, namely Category:Latvian terms derived from Proto-Baltic. Additionally, I'd suggest keeping this category simply to serve as a container for Proto-Baltic etymologies which some editors might add from a bit obsolete sources. It is better hove such entries listed here, rather than force editors to use Proto-Balto-Slavic in lieu of Proto-Baltic, which could cause an introduction of wrong/unconventional etymologies. Once they are here, editors familiar with Wiktionary's conventions on Proto-Balto-Slavic could look such entries here and rectify them. --Ivan Štambuk (talk) 17:03, 19 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
