From French Copte, from Egyptian Arabic قُفْط, قُبْط (“Copts”), from Coptic ⲅⲩⲡⲧⲓⲟⲥ (guptios, “Egyptian”), ⲕⲩⲡⲧⲁⲓⲟⲥ (kuptaios, “Egyptian”), from Late (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek Αἰγύπτιος (Aigúptios), from earlier Αἴγυπτος (Aíguptos). Doublet of Gypsy. More at Egypt.
