Etymology[edit]

Alteration of the surname Coppett, from Middle English coppet, copped (literally peaked, headed), an adjective which also had the secondary meaning of "haughty". Thence, a nickname for a haughty person.

Middle English copped is a derivative of Middle English cop (top, summit, crown of the head), a word inherited from Old English copp (top, summit, round head), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *kuppaz (crown of the head, hilltop, orb, bowl).
