Etymology

Formally from German Low German Düker, from Middle Low German düker (“diver”, also “culvert”?). A doublet of Taucher (diver). The sense “culvert” might be a loan translation of Dutch duiker. At least its adoption into standard German was probably reinforced by Dutch.
