- Inherited from Old Frisian diēr (whence North Frisian Diirt).
- Borrowed from Middle Low German dērt (whence German Low German Diert).
Ultimately in any case from Proto-West Germanic *deuʀ. Cognates include West Frisian dier and German Tier.
