Etymology

[edit]

De Haag is the older form of standard Dutch Den Haag, which is actually a petrified accusative/dative form. In western dialects De Haag is likely a pronunciation spelling, as final [n] after [ə] is commonly lost.

De Haag n

  1. (archaic) The Hague
    • 1663, anonymous author, “Gezang op 't Hoornsche Pleizier.”, in 't Hoorns vermaeck'lijck treck-schuytje, volume 2, page 17:
Ik neem de Haag, daar 't Hof-gezin
Haar woon-plaatz' houd: wat steeckt 'er in?
         Onkuysheid, en bedriegen
I take The Hague [for instance], where the royal family
Keeps its residence: what's in it?
         Unchastity, and deceit
    • 1747, K. G., De Haag in vreugd, Kornelis Kloek, page 5:
Maar toen Oranjes vorst ten lesten op kwam dagen,
Door vlugge paarden en zyn schoone koets gedragen,
Vloog elk de Haag straks uit.
But when the prince of Orange finally appeared,
Born by swift horses and his fair coach,
all flew right out of The Hague.
To that end I suppose that Gorcum, having to impart a message on The Hague, raises a flag; Dordrecht seeing this also raises a flag, Rotterdam, Delft and The Hague do the same. — Delft seeing that The Hague has raised its flag, lowers its own, Rotterdam, Dordrecht and Gorcum follow suit.
  2. (The Hague dialect) The Hague
