Etymology

De Haag is the older form of standard Dutch Den Haag, which is actually a petrified accusative/dative form. In western dialects De Haag is likely a pronunciation spelling, as final [n] after [ə] is commonly lost.

     To that end I suppose that Gorcum, having to impart a message on The Hague, raises a flag; Dordrecht seeing this also raises a flag, Rotterdam, Delft and The Hague do the same. — Delft seeing that The Hague has raised its flag, lowers its own, Rotterdam, Dordrecht and Gorcum follow suit.
