- Reduced Anglicized form of Irish Ó Duibheannaigh (“descendant of Duibheannach”), a personal name of unclear origin, but perhaps composed of the elements dubh (“black”) and eanach (“marshy place”).
- Reduced Anglicized form of Irish Ó Duibheamhna (“descendant of Dubheamhna”), a personal name composed of the elements dubh (“black”) and the genitive form of Eamhain (“Navan Fort, the legendary capital of Ulster”).
