Known as simply Turnu Severin for most of its history (from turnul (lui) Severin), from the name of a tower built by the Byzantines on the north bank of the Danube, later named after the Banat of Severin, in memory of St. Severinus of Noricum. Drobeta, which was the ancient Roman name for the city, was added back to the city's name in 1972.
