From Middle High German īwe, from Old High German īwa, from Proto-Germanic *īwō, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *(h₁)éy-weh₂-. Cognate with dated Dutch ijf, English yew (the latter from a masculine stem Proto-Germanic *īwaz), Lithuanian ievà, Russian iva. From the root *h1ey- "reddish, colorful".
