From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle High German aspe, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German aspa. The modern vocalism is from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Low German espe, in which it is generalized from derivatives with umlaut. Cognate with Dutch esp.
