Luxembourgish

Etymology

From a common name for pets, probably from an onomatopoeia fifi for whistling. The name has been used especially of dogs (which are called by whistling) and birds (which whistle themselves). Compare German Fiffi (little dog), dialectal German fifi (interjection used to indicate that the seeker in a game of hide-and-seek may now start their search).
