[edit]From Middle High German gedæhtnisse, from Old High German githēhtnissi (“thoughts (about something)”). Equivalent to gedaacht (“past participle of denke (“to think”)”) + -nis (“ness”). Cognate with German Gedächtnis, Luxembourgish Gediechtnes.
