Gleis
German
Alternative forms
Etymology
The contemporary form is shortened from the variant Geleise, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle High German geleis (“track”), itself pertaining to Middle High German leise, from Old High German leisa.
Pronunciation
Noun
Gleis n (genitive Gleises, plural Gleise)
Usage notes
- In German train stations, trains are announced as leaving from a numbered track, not a platform. Platforms (Bahnsteige) give access to one or two tracks, and are usually not numbered themselves.
