[edit]From Middle High German gestete (“shore, bank”), from Middle High German gestat (whence Gstad and German Gestade), from Old High German stad, stado, from Proto-Germanic *staþaz. Compare Early New High German gestätte (“embankments on a vinyard”). Cognate with English stathe.
