Etymology

From Ancient Greek γυμνός (gumnós, naked) + Belideus (a genus associated with the sugar glider), from βέλος (bélos, dart, arrow).

Belideus refers to the resemblance of the Leadbeater's possum to the sugar glider (a related species), and gymno- (naked) refers to the absence of a gliding membrane, highlighting a key difference. Authored by Frederick McCoy in 1867.
