Etymology[edit]
First attested as hadewartswoude and hadewertswoude in 1280-1287. Compound of Middle Dutch Hadewart (“a personal name”) and wout (“marsh forest, swamp forest”). The element dorp (“village”) was added at a later date to distinguish the settlement from Hazerswoude-Rijndijk.
