Etymology

[edit]

Possibly from New Latin *herniāria f (herniary, relating to a hernia). This etymology may draw a conceptual cognate with English rupturewort, since hernias are a medical disorder in which a part of the body ruptures into elsewhere abnormally. Both are possibly named after the genus' usage to treat hernias. If so, cognate with English herniary.
